Angel Gonzalez, a student at our Lennox/ SBWIB YouthBuild site, came to YouthBuild so he could get away from the gang culture at his previous school. Thanks to the construction training program at SBWIB YouthBuild, Angel began to thrive and make changes to his life. Read more about his YouthBuild story here.

We are excited to be back in the classroom for a return to in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year! To help you navigate all the new changes to health and safety at our school sites in response to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we've put together a new web page to keep track of all the updates.

Congratulations to Deoutrie Dodson, a senior at our Fresno site, on being awarded a $1,000 RAPSA Courage Award Scholarship. The RAPSA Courage Award celebrates students who have faced unusual barriers to completing their high school education and did so recognizing the value of a high school diploma for personal, family or community accomplishments. It includes a $1,000 scholarship to assist with post-secondary education expenses at either a career technical institution, a college or a university. Read more about Deoutrie's story at the link.

It's National Apprenticeship Week! Our Construction Academy has been a catalyst for many students to earn their MC3 pre-apprenticeship certification and continue on to Southern California Building and Construction Trades apprenticeship programs. Several of our Construction Academy alumni have since completed apprenticeship programs and are now journeymen and women. We wanted to highlight two of those alumni, Luis Rivera and John Paul Ruiz.

Our South LA students and staff built a community altar and took a field trip to Grand Park and Olvera Street in Downtown LA on November 2 to celebrate Día de los Muertos. The trip was part of their Community Action Project (CAP), exploring the theme of healing from trauma. Click the headline to learn more about their trip and view photos.

For the 2021/22 school year, YCSC is required to communicate the educational options for families and their pupils in the 2021–22 school year related to Independent Study. With the recent passage of AB 130, all schools and school districts must now notify parents and guardians of their options to enroll their pupil in in-person instruction or Independent Study during the 2021–22 school year (EC Section 51747).

Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 Pandemic and distance learning, over 270 young people graduated from YouthBuild Charter School of California during the 2020-21 school year. Congratulations, graduates!

All 2021 YCSC graduates are now eligible to apply for the Education Is Forever Scholarship and Mentorship Program for the opportunity to receive a $1,000 scholarship and be paired with a mentor.

On March 18, 2021, our Palmdale site at Antelope Valley YouthBuild hosted a virtual CAP (Community Action Project) called "Beauty from Ashes: A Virtual Empowerment Summit." If you missed the event, we recorded the Zoom and edited a video together, so you can check it out!

At YouthBuild Charter School of California, we formally oppose any and all forms of racism, xenophobia, and intolerance against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

After a complete review of the ongoing global concerns of both the spread of COVID-19 and of the extensive survey input from all stakeholders, the YouthBuild Charter School of California Board of Directors has decided to continue with Distance Learning during Trimester 3 of the 20/21 school year.
