Senior Spotlight: Jocelynn Reyes-Garcia

Jocelynn Reyes-Garcia is a 24-year-old senior from our Fresno site at Fresno EOC LCC/ YouthBuild Fresno.

Q: Why did you leave your previous school(s) and what made you enroll at YouthBuild Charter?

Jocelynn: I left my previous school because their way of teaching wasn’t doing me any good, I wasn’t retaining the knowledge.

Q: What did you like most about your YouthBuild Charter School of California experience?

Jocelynn: The environment is very positive, professional, and productive.

Q: What has been your favorite YouthBuild memory?

Jocelynn: My favorite memory at YouthBuild Charter is Miss Gamit and the grandmas being very enthusiastic and encouraging!

Q: How did your YouthBuild Charter School experience compare to your previous school experience?

Jocelynn: They teach you hands-on with your assignments unlike my previous school where they would give you a packet of work and tell you to finish it as homework for one credit.

Q: What are some of the skills/lessons you learned at YouthBuild Charter School of California that you think will stick with you after you graduate?

Jocelynn: The Financial Empowerment Plan I learned in Economics with Mr. Smith is something I already am using in my personal life. So I know it’s something that will stay with me for years to come.

Q: What did you think about the project-based learning at YouthBuild Charter School?

Jocelynn: I think it helps people stop being so introverted since Covid, helping us all with our social skills.

Q: Who or what has helped motivate you to graduate?

Jocelynn: My biggest motivation to graduate would have to be myself. I felt so guilty and ashamed of not finishing school before moving out of state. I needed to do this for myself to prove to myself that I am capable and smart enough to graduate so I can start the next chapter of school and enroll in college. Also, I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the unconditional support and love of my mother who has always wanted the best for me and has showed me it’s never to late to finish school and improve myself.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

Jocelynn: After graduation, I will be enrolling in Fresno City College and I intend to study law to pursue a career as a lawyer.
